The Flying Mobulas
Flying lessons anyone?
Mobula rays are the large animals famous for their ability to jump out of the water as high as 2 meters. They live in the open seas of tropical and subtropical regions. The length of these flying rays can reach 2 meters (including tail), their wingspan often exceeds two meters and the weight of adult mobula is usually more than 200 kilograms. Their broad fins not only help them to move smoothly underwater, but also act as wings, when they jump out.
The view is simply breathtaking when tens of thousands of these impressive creatures gather off the coast of Baja California (Mexico). Scientists try to find the answer why mobulas gather in certain periods and places, and then start to jump out of the water together. But on the other hand: having such broad wings, why not fly?
