COZUMEL SCUBA FEST 2014
The Cozumel Scuba Fest is fast becoming known as the most important dive festival in the Americas. The event includes not only diving but also offers the visitor business, marketing and networking opportunities on a global level. Participants are exposed to the latest in research and teaching and it is a place to hone skills in photography and other dive related topics. Some of the most renown names in the industry are there. Ongoing now until the 14th.
For many divers one of the highlights is to dive the new Scuba Fest Route of Jean-Michel Cousteau (son of the iconic late Jacques-Yves Cousteau). This special dive route covers Cozumel's nine most beautiful coral reefs. This extraordinary route comprises nine dives around the Island. It includes "la Francesa-Simone Cousteau reef", named to honor Mrs. Simone Cousteau, first woman diver and wife of Jacques Cousteau. A six site junior route is also available, it is targeted towards junior divers and those with less time to dive. This route excludes the three deepest dives. The Cousteau family is highly regarded in Cozumel as it was first Jacques-Yves Cousteau and later the rest of the family that showed the world the reefs of Cozumel. Both routes pay a visit to the underwater sculpture of Jacques Cousteau. The sculpture was placed offshore during a memorial ceremony at last year's Cozumel Scuba Fest. This year a statue of Mexican diver Ramon Bravo will join that of Cousteau in the Underwater Museum of the Buzo de Oro (Golden diver). Divers who completes a route during the festival will have a special certificate and log book. The presentation of which will include a photo with Jean-Michel Cousteau.Last year the Fest organized the First Golden Diver Award. The Cozumel Scuba Fest Organizing Committee conducted extensive research of notable contemporary divers whose careers, dedication and contributions to the scuba profession have been admired and have contributed significantly to Mexico's diving industry. This award, The Golden Diver (El Buzo de Oro), proudly acknowledges these accomplishments. It is a national recognition of increasing importance. Last year five individuals were recognized. The Second Golden Diver Awards will take place on December, 13 at the 2014 Third Annual Scuba Fest of Cozumel.
In addition to the diving and the award ceremonies, the Scuba Fest has a dive expo, a number of conferences, symposiums and lectures. The topics range from underwater photography and marine park conservation to how to put a tiger shark in a trance.
